The Port of Valencia promotes the Ecoport II initiative

The Port Authority of Valencia (spain) promotes the Ecoport II initiative, which has the support of 29 companies belonging to the enclaves of Valencia, Sagunto and Gandía in order to optimize the environmental sustainability of its activity within the framework of the Valenciaport 2030, zero emissions strategy.

Within this framework, in the 2022 activities, the companies that make up the Ecoport II Environmental Committee established nine environmental objectives that could be chosen voluntarily by the participating companies.

The objectives seek to reduce electricity, water and fuel consumption, increase the percentage of recovered waste, the use of alternative energy sources, the calculation of the carbon footprint or participation in environmental initiatives, among others.

During 2022, an environmental training and awareness agreement has also been closed for certified and level 5 companies, either within the framework of Ecoport II, or internally by each company. In this sense, a total of 2,500 man/hours have been assigned, out of the total number of workers that make up all the companies and 90% completed the training courses.

Apart from this project, it is worth mentioning that the Port of Valencia has become the first port in the world to use a 4×4 truck tractor powered by green hydrogen to move containers in its terminals.

It is the first unit of this class that is powered by hydrogen, which has been developed by Atena, a research and technology center made up of universities, research institutes and private companies based in the Italian region of Campania.
