The Dallas Cowboys close out their rookie mini-camp with

This past weekend, the Dallas Cowboys wrapped up their rookie mini-camp, which featured 29 players, a mix of 2023 draft picks and undrafted free agents and some 2022 picks. These young players hit the field for first time to work with the coaching staff. Notable absent, however, was head coach Mike McCarthy, who was recovering from a back procedure performed on Friday.

The field was abuzz with activity with players showing off their physical, movement and technical skills. Among the 29 participants, names such as Issac Alarcón, DL, from Monterrey Tech (Signed in the 2020 International Road Program), and DeMarvion Overshown, LB, from Texas (2023 Draft Third Round Selection) stood out. In addition to the signers, two players were also in action in a test.

Although the rookies had no physical contact, they had a chance to familiarize themselves with the Dallas system and set expectations. Skill players had the opportunity to shine at mini-camp, showcasing their athleticism and ball skills in an open field environment.

Among those who stood out, DeMarvion Overshown drew both praise and criticism when he was selected in the third round of the 2023 draft. His performance in minicamp will be an indicator of how the Dallas Cowboys plan to use him going forward.

Another name to note is Asim Richards, selected in the fifth round of the draft, from North Carolina. Despite the lack of contact at minicamp, Richards managed to make a strong impression through his hard work and dedication.

Despite McCarthy’s absence, the team was in good hands with coordinators taking the reins. The rookies and veterans will work together for the first time Monday in Phase 2 of the offseason program. McCarthy is expected to return soon, though it’s not yet clear when.

In other news, the team has yet to figure out its kicker situation. John Fassel, special teams coach, mentioned that any player not currently on the team is under consideration, including veterans with NFL experience.

Finally, it was announced that the Dallas Cowboys will open the 2023 season against their rival, the New York Giants, a team they have dominated for the past six decades. Regardless of the challenges they face, the Cowboys are clearly prepared and willing to give it their all in the coming season.
