Summary of Major League Baseball games, Monday, May 15, 2023

Shohei Ohtani had a tough outing on the mound, but the same can’t be said for his offensive performance. Ohtani went within a double of making a carousel and the Los Angeles Angels posted a 9-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night.

With four hits and a walk, Ohtani became the first starting pitcher since 1964 to hit the bases five times in a game. The last to achieve the feat was Mel Sottlemyre of the New York Yankees.

Ohtani notably hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning, which put the Angels ahead for good. Prior to that bombshell, Ohtani had singled in the third inning.

Back at bat in the fifth inning for the fourth time in the game, Ohtani got a triple with a slap to right-center field. Ohtani had a chance to complete his carousel in the seventh inning, but he hit a ground ball to the infield.

Then in the ninth inning, Ohtani got one last chance to hit the second carousel of his career. Instead, he dropped the ball to left field and scored another single.

The Japanese finished the game with four hits, three runs scored, three RBIs and a walk.

Despite a rocky start, Ohtani earned his fifth win of the season in six decisions. He ruled for seven innings, allowing four hits, two walks and five earned runs.

Ohtani notably allowed three homers, to Adam Frazier, Anthony Santander and Cedric Mullins.

With this win, the Angels end a short two-game losing streak.

Grayson Rodriguez had a rocky start to the mound for the Orioles. He allowed eight runs, nine hits and three walks in just three and a third innings.

The Mets cry, Corbin smiles

Joey Meneses hit four hits, CJ Abrams hit a long pitch and the Washington Nationals beat the New York Mets 10-3 to split a four-game series.

The Mets have lost nine of their last 13 games. The Mets are 0-5-2 in their last seven series and haven’t won a straight game since winning three in a row from April 19-21. The Mets are currently ranked fourth in the Nationals East Division, a game and a half ahead of the bottom-ranked Nationals.

Patrick Corbin (2-5) won his first home game since Aug. 28, giving up two runs and eight hits in six innings of work.

The rebuilding Nationals scored in every inning but the second to improve to 17-17 after losing five of their first six games of the season.

The Nationals scored two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth inning against Peterson, who gave up six runs and nine hits in five innings of work. Peterson has given up at least four runs in six straight starts and his average has climbed to a season-high 8.08.

Abrams hit a solo homer against Tommy Hunter in the sixth inning. It was the second day in a row that Abrams had hit a long ball, as three of his four homers this season came against the Mets.

Meneses added an infield single later in the inning and a double in the eighth inning.

The Mets had three hits in two different innings against Corbin, but only had one run in both, Jeff McNeil’s single in the second and Tommy Pham’s sacrifice fly in the sixth. .
