Spanish coaches rule among the stars

The Spanish coaching school is among the elite. This reality, palpable in the day-to-day life of the ATP and WTA circuits, has been revealed at the Mutua Madrid Open, where seven of the 16 players classified for the round of 16 in the men’s draw work with a national preparer.

The trend also extends to the female draw, in which stars like the Egyptian Mayar Sheriffone of the revelations of the tournament, -who could only be stopped by Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals- also has a Spanish coach since he was 16 years old, Justo González.

Álex Corretja analyzed this phenomenon for ABC, and highlighted the work, its methodology and mindset as the fundamental questions. «The Spanish mentality is always one of working hard, being very disciplined, orderly… Also understanding tennis tactics, rivals and the court very well. That is why many players turn to our house. They’re looking for that experience,” he said.

Thus, in the MMO, many of those who have qualified for the final rounds –and some others who have not– have Spaniards among their staff.

In addition to Carlos Alcaraz, Jaume Munar and Alejandro Davidovich –trained by Juan Carlos Ferrero, Javier Fernández and Jorge Aguirre respectively–, foreigners like the Russians Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev make use of the spanish house. The finalists in the men’s doubles have Pepo Clavet and Fernando Vicente directing them.

Also Alexander Zverev, who is trained by Sergi Bruguera, Pedro Cachín, who has been working with him Alex Corretja For some time now and Felix Auger-Aliassime, trained and advised by Toni Nadal, bets on the Spanish school.

As for the girls, in addition to the African Sherif, the Chinese Qinweng Zhen has the support of Pere Riba from the stands.
