Perfect match day for HSV, Darmstadt awarded second match ball
Stand: 14.05.2023 | Reading time: 4 minutes
HSV is the big winner of the 32nd match day. After the pursuers blundered in the fight for promotion to the Bundesliga on Saturday, Hamburg celebrated a rifle festival the following day. At the top, both Darmstadt and Heidenheim lost their games.
Dhe Hamburger SV can dream more than ever of returning to the Bundesliga. The traditional club, which is in third place in the second division, won its away game against Regensburg, who were threatened with relegation, 5-1 (4-0) and thus reduced the gap to Darmstadt and Heidenheim, who were ahead of them.
While the southern Hesse team also gave up their second match ball for early promotion after the clear defeat against FC St. Pauli at 1: 2 (1: 2) in Hanover, Heidenheim also lost, which at 2: 3 (2: 1) in Paderborn to break had still taken the lead in the standings. Within two minutes the SCP then turned after the change of sides.
The last two matchdays of the season promise maximum excitement in the fight for promotion to the Bundesliga. The pursuers from Paderborn, as well as St. Pauli and Düsseldorf, who only managed a goalless draw in a direct duel on Saturday, only have a theoretical chance of third place.
Hamburger SV has at least the promotion relegation place practically certain. In the one-sided game, Robert Glatzel (5th), twice Sonny Kittel (17th / penalty kick, 45th + 1) and Miro Muheim (30th) brought the favorites clearly in front before the break. The goal by Kaan Caliskaner (55th) at the premiere of the new Regensburg coach Joe Enochs was not enough. Substitute Filip Bilbija (81st) made the final score with the fifth HSV goal.
After their first success away from home after six games without a win, the Hamburgers have a six-point lead over their pursuers SC Paderborn, FC St. Pauli and Fortuna Düsseldorf, who are tied on points, with two games still to play. The gap to second in the table 1. FC Heidenheim is only one point.
In Regensburg, the guests from the north quickly made the balance of power clear. After the break, the hosts kept the game more open and shortened it with Caliskans. Nevertheless, Hamburg kept the game under control.
More dismissals than goals for Darmstadt
Darmstadt 98 conceded a 1: 2 (1: 2) at Hannover 96 and thus missed the early ticket for the direct transition to the first class three games before the end. The leaders of the second division played too prone to errors and deservedly suffered their second defeat in a row. Possibly also relevant for the coming week: Matthias Bader and Braydon Manu saw yellow and red cards in the final phase.
The 96 attackers Havard Nielsen (11th minute) and Cedric Teuchert (31st) dampened the promotion euphoria of the more than 3500 guest fans among the 30,000 spectators. Phillip Tietz (43rd) made the connection.
Thanks to a gap of three points to Heidenheim and four to Hamburger SV, the second division team can make the fourth first division promotion in the club’s history next Friday (6.30 p.m. / Sky) in the penultimate game of the season against Magdeburg.
Darmstadt looked insecure in the first half, 96 was much more active. The Norwegian headed Nielsen, Teuchert increased from a tight angle. Shortly before the end of the first half, Darmstadt’s top scorer Tietz shortened.
In the second half of the game, a partly chaotic game developed and was characterized by many inaccuracies on both sides. Referee Sascha Stegemann took back a lob from Lower Saxony (48′) for offside and showed Darmstadt’s Bader a yellow-red card (86′). In injury time (90 + 3) Manu was also hit, the lilies ended the game with nine players.
Heidenheim gambled away the win within two minutes
Severe setback instead of an early promotion party for 1. FC Heidenheim. The 2:3 (2:1) at SC Paderborn reduced the lead over HSV in the relegation zone from four points to one point. However, it has been clear since Saturday that the FCH has at least the relegation. Paderborn moved up to fourth place with the win and kept their minimal chance of promotion relegation.
Kai Klefisch gave Paderborn the lead with his first goal in the second division (26th). Tim Kleindienst with his 24th goal of the season (30th) and Denis Thomalla (36th) still ensured Heidenheim’s break lead. But Paderborn turned the game around again through Marvin Pieringer (50th) and the outstanding Florent Muslija (52nd).
HSV’s early 2-0 lead in Regensburg quickly made it clear that Heidenheim’s promotion was not going to happen this Sunday and that Paderborn’s chances are only more realistic. The players from both camps were informed because the intermediate results were displayed on the scoreboard every fifteen minutes.
Heidenheim fell behind, but thanks to goals from Kleindienst and Thomalla, FCH suddenly took over the virtual lead in view of Darmstadt’s deficit – which he gambled away again shortly after the break within two minutes. As a result, the SCP was mostly closer to the 4:2 than Heidenheim to the equalizer.
