Schwartzman took the second set against Borges with claw and tennis

The beginning of the path of Argentine Legion in Roland Garros left a balance of eight wins and just three losseswhich is exciting to modify a difficult panorama of recent years in the favorite Grand Slam of tennis players from Albiceleste.

As of this Wednesday, on day 4 of the competition, those who advanced to the second round had to ratify their great start: Diego Schwartzman before the portuguese Nuno Borges y Nadia Podoroska against the czech Karolina Muchova. El Peque wins 7-6 and 6-4 against the European, while Rosario has already lost 3-6, 6-0 and 3-6 against the 43rd in the world.

In addition, this Wednesday it will be my turn to go out on the pitch to Carlos Alcaraz y Novak Djokovicthe two top favorites to win the second Grand Slam of the year, a mention that could also fall to Stefanos Tsitsipaswho already won and entered the third round (he will play against the winner of Schwartzman vs. Borges).

Schwartzman vs Borges, for another joy

The first to jump into the Bois de Boulogne brick dust is Schwartzman, who faces the Portuguese Nuno Borges80 in the world ranking and that comes from surpassing the American giant John Isner in the super tie break of the fifth set.

In the first round, the 29-year-old Argentine and 95th in the ATP staged a miraculous comeback also in five sets, after losing the first two, against the Spanish Bernabé Zapata Miralles. The data? He has made 20 tournaments, since the US Open 2022, that he has not managed to win two consecutive games on the professional circuit.

In a changing and very balanced first set of proceedings, with service breaks on both sides, Diego served for a set 5-4 but failed to close the set while Borges got loose, broke him and turned the story around to get 6-5 up, passing all the pressure to the Argentine.

In that twelfth game there was a controversial move that could have been key: El Peque argued with the umpire for an action in which he seemed to be right and, far from losing concentration, he used that anger to get 6-6 and force the tie break, which it was 7-3 for the Argentine.

El Peque confirmed his positive attitude at the start of the second set, appearing much more confident and intelligent with his serve against a Borges who also gave battle. The break to make it 3-1 gave the Argentine the advantage, but the Portuguese twisted history by breaking at 4-2 and tying the score at 4-4 with great solvency.

In that ninth game that appeared to be crucial, Diego was 0-30 but recovered and ended up taking the game yelling “Let’s go!” that made the Argentine fans vibrate who came to encourage their compatriot.

At 5-4 in favor, Diego had a first set point with Borges serving 30-40 when the Portuguese shot a drop that hit the belt and ended up on Peque’s side. It didn’t matter: a little while later he had his chance again and took a wonderful drop that became impossible for his rival and meant the final 6-4 in favor of the Argentine.

Schwartzman vs. Borges: controversy and Topo Gigio in the first set

El Peque was on the ropes in game 12, serving down 5-6 against Borges in a set where breaks were a constant. In this context of doubts and tension, the Argentine made it 30-15 but the Portuguese called the umpire to review a pike.

The judge came down and gave the point to the European, a situation that provoked the anger of Schwartzman, who explained that Borges had given continuity to the game. The repetition seemed to agree with the Peque, who reluctantly accepted the authority’s decision.

Far from falling, Diego used that play as fuel to motivate himself and start throwing balls at the straps and putting pressure on the Portuguese. In a balloon that was the winner, the Peque forced the tie break and put his hand to his ear in the form of Topo Gigio, bringing out his blue and gold heart.

With his spirits up and annoyed by Borges’s anti-fair play attitude, Schwartzman dominated the tiebreaker from the beginning to take it with a resounding 7-3, which meant the first set of the match in favor of the Argentine.

Podoroska, contra Muchova

At the same time that the Peque played Nadia Podoroskasemifinalist of this contest in 2020 and who has just beaten Jessica Ponchet (123rd) in two sets. His rival was the Czech Karolina Muchova (43rd), who gave one of the blows of the opening round by eliminating the number 8 of the WTA Maria Sakkari.

After an even first set that was in favor of the Czech 6-3, Rosario recovered and completely dominated the second round with a resounding 6-0. However, Muchova made her hierarchy despite her in the final set to prevail again 6-3 and liquidate the game and the illusion of Argentina.

All the action on Wednesday

The world number 1 Carlos Alcaraz will take over on the central court of Roland Garros to Novak Djokovic (3rd), who will play in a night session, in the second round of the great Parisian. The Spanish tennis player will play against the Japanese taro daniel (110º) and the Serbian will collide with the Hungarian Marton Fucsovics (80º).

In the first turn, in the Suzanne Lenglen, Stefanos Tsitsipas (5th) swept the Spanish Roberto Carballés (58th) and continues in Paris, with the main objective of winning the first Grand Slam of his career and the chance to snatch 1 in the ranking from alcaraz.

Tsitsipas was a steamroller against Carballés in his twentieth victory at Roland Garros, which led him to the third round of the tournament for the fifth consecutive edition, after winning 6-3, 7-6(4) and 6-2 in 2 hours and 16 minutes.

With a feint of comeback in the second set, the Spaniard ended up giving in unceremoniously to the power of Hellene, a finalist in 2021, who gave no trace of the doubts shown in the first round against the Czech Jiri Vesely, who snatched a set from him and forced a tough tiebreaker game in the fourth.

Carballés, who has never beaten a top-10, fell very short in their duel on the Suzanne Lenglen track. He seemed to re-engage in the match when he twice recovered lost serves and managed to force a tie break, but he didn’t seem to be able to win. Already without morale, the third set was a mere procedure for the Greek.

Tsitsipas, finalist of the last Australian Open and the Barcelona tournament, will be measured for a place in the round of 16 against the winner of the duel between the Argentine Diego Schwartzman and the Portuguese Nuno Borges.
