Fans of FC Schalke 04 and Eintracht Frankfurt got into violent clashes after the 2-2 draw. Frankfurt fans climbed out of the guest block and fought in the stands of the Gelsenkirchen Arena with supporters of the hosts. They then climbed back into their block.

During the argument, a DRK employee was injured by punches in the face and had to be taken to the hospital, the police said in the evening. Three police officers were also injured. Further attacks could be prevented thanks to the strong commitment of the officials. Criminal proceedings have been initiated against ten Eintracht Frankfurt fans. But there were also Schalke fans who tried to break through the police chains, and they were also being investigated.

After the final whistle, Schalke professionals clashed with Frankfurters on the pitch and fought verbal battles. “I was at the interview and was only told that our players shouldn’t have run to 16 and that that would have provoked Schalke – yes, special people here,” said Eintracht captain Sebastian Rode.

Coach Thomas Reis’ team separated 2:2 (1:1) from the Hessians. Schalke remains on the relegation rank, at least for the time being, but can already slip to a direct relegation zone this Sunday. In front of 61,575 spectators in Gelsenkirchen, Simon Terodde scored the 1-0 for the hosts in the first minute. Daichi Kamada (21st) and Tuta (59th) turned the game for Frankfurt before substitute Sebastian Polter (85th) saved the Revierclub at least one point with his late equalizer.

Because competitor VfL Bochum equalized at Hertha BSC in injury time, Schalke did not leave the relegation place. The Frankfurt team of outgoing coach Oliver Glasner failed to really put pressure on Bayer Leverkusen in sixth place in the race for a place in the European Cup in the Bundesliga.

With a choreography under the motto “I’ll always wear blue and white”, the Schalke fans got their team in the mood for what Reis called the “final”. And the motivational measure worked: Not a minute was played before the home area of the arena collectively freaked out. Rodrigo Zalazar brought a free kick in the middle and Terodde headed in to make it 1-0. Terodde, Zalazar, Tim Skarke and Kenan Karaman were supposed to make up for the absence of the suspended Schalke top scorer Marius Bülter as a collective – things couldn’t have started any better.

“Everyone knows that we have to win this game if we want to keep the class,” Bülter said before the game on Sky. His colleagues went to work with corresponding commitment. A balanced encounter developed with a lot of fighting and few goal-area scenes.

Referee explains controversial scene at Schalke

Referee Daniel Schlager has explained his view of the controversial scene before Eintracht Frankfurt’s 1-1 draw at FC Schalke 04. “Jerking is still common practice, certainly borderline. But it wasn’t enough for me to take the goal back. That’s why I stuck to my decision,” said the 33-year-old on Sky on Saturday after the 2-2 draw on the 33rd matchday of the Bundesliga.

Schalke right-back Cédric Brunner went down a few seconds before goal in a duel with Frankfurt’s Christopher Lenz. Schlager received the information from the video assistant that it was a duel “in the gray area”, he said. So he watched the scene again on the screen.

Schalke coach Thomas Reis said: “Personally, I thought it was a foul game. If it’s close to our penalty area, it’s 100 percent blown.”
