As expected, FC Brentford have pulled Mark Flekken’s release clause at SC Freiburg. Both clubs confirmed the move of the 29-year-old keeper from the Bundesliga to the Premier League on Wednesday. The Dutchman signed a contract with the “Bees”, who also managed to stay up in the second year as ninth in the table, until 2027.

The sports club, which brought Flekken from MSV Duisburg for 2 million euros in the summer of 2018, will receive the sixth highest transfer fee in the club’s history at 13 million euros. Robin Koch also went to England in 2020 for this amount. In the history of the Bundesliga, only one goalkeeper went abroad for more money: Bernd Leno in 2018 for 25 million euros to FC Arsenal.

Flekken himself, who of all Bundesliga keeper’s has kept the most clean sheets this season, added: “I experienced five incredibly intense years in Freiburg, with lows like my serious injury and with many highs like the games in the Europa League, the DFB Cup final and great performances in the Bundesliga. I would like to thank those responsible who have shown and kept their trust in me over the years. The time at the sports club shaped me and I am grateful to be able to experience this as an athlete and as a person.” At FC Brentford, the Dutchman meets his former team-mate Kevin Schade (21), who switched in the winter.
