According to corresponding reports from the “Ruhr Nachrichten” and “Sport 1”, Schmelzer should join the U17s as an assistant coach. The 35-year-old is currently doing his coaching license.

In 2005, Schmelzer switched from 1. FC Magdeburg to the youth department of Borussia Dortmund. Schmelzer should spend his entire career in the black and yellow BVB dress.

After playing as a second substitute, he was promoted to the pros by the then BVB coach Jürgen Klopp in 2008, where he was able to establish himself as a regular at left-back. Overall, Schmelzer played 258 Bundesliga games for BVB. This puts him in eleventh place in the list of BVB professionals with the most Bundesliga games – he was recently pushed out of the top ten by Marco Reus.

More games in the upper house also prevented injuries – he was shaken by serious injuries, especially towards the end of his career. Also because of his susceptibility to injury, Schmelzer ended his active career after the 2021/22 season, which saw BVB’s greatest successes in the recent past. In 2011 and 2012 he was German champion with Westphalia, and in 2012, 2017 and 2021 he won the cup. In 2013 he was in the final of the Champions League with “his” BVB, but lost it 2-1 to FC Bayern Munich in Wembley. He was European champion with the German U21s in 2009, he played 16 international matches for the German national team between 2010 and 2014, but he did not make it into the squad for the 2014 World Cup.
