Remco Evenepoel with helicopter to hotel after mountain stage, Cycling Union threatens with sanctions

A helicopter flew Remco Evenepoel and some teammates to their hotel on Saturday after the stage on the Gran Sasso in the Tour of Italy. The International Cycling Union UCI condemned the helicopter transport in a statement.

The transfer was offered for a fee by the Giro itself. To gain some extra recovery time, Soudal Quick-Step had used the helicopter.

But the UCI is now blowing the whistle on the Giro: “Helicopter transport goes against the principles of fair play and the measures for equal treatment in the transport of the teams to their hotels. In addition, the use of a helicopter goes against the principle of reducing the ecological footprint.’ The Cycling Union also mentioned that it will take the necessary measures and sanctions to avoid such practices in the future.

In addition to Evenepoel, his Belgian teammates Ilan van Wilder and Louis Vervaeke, the Italian Mattia Cattaneo and the Czech Jan Hirt also took place in the helicopter.
