RB Leipzig wins at FC Bayern: BVB has master races in hand

Future Munich Laimer meets

FC Bayern has opened the championship door wide for Borussia Dortmund. The Munich series champions failed in their ultimate title test against a DFB Cup finalist RB Leipzig, who turned up a lot after the break, and after their 1: 3 (1: 0) shock they have to fear that BVB, who are one point behind, will lose on Sunday (5:30 p.m. / DAZN) passes them with a win at FC Augsburg. A season without a title and severe turbulence in the club could now become reality for the German champions of the past ten seasons – with consequences right up to the club management. CEO Oliver Kahn and Co. sat in dismay on the stands.

Coach Thomas Tuchel and his players had a hand on the championship trophy for a long time. In front of 75,000 fans in the sold-out Allianz Arena, national player Serge Gnabry made it 1-0 in the 25th minute. Bayern had the game and their opponents under control – until Leipzig hit back hard. The presumed Bayern signing Konrad Laimer scored the equalizer (65′) after a Munich corner was blocked.

And things got even worse for the league leaders: Frenchman Christopher Nkunku converted the penalty due after his compatriot Benjamin Pavard fouled him (76th). And then there was another penalty. This time Dominik Szoboszlai converted after a handball from Bayern defender Noussair Mazraoui (85th). With the win, Leipzig secured their Champions League ticket prematurely as third in the table.

The Bayern game only went according to plan for an hour. 27-year-old Gnabry scored Bayern’s 2,700th home goal in the Bundesliga. It was Gnabry’s fifth goal in the past four games. And the goal was wonderfully combined from back to front in the attacking move via the strong Joao Cancelo and captain Thomas Müller. Gnabry finished with a powerful shot at the inside post. As a grandstand guest, national coach Hansi Flick was able to look forward to Gnabry’s form before the three international matches in June.

“We have to do our things,” said Tuchel before kick-off on “Sky” about the close title race with BVB. He put his team a bit more defensively by nominating Leon Goretzka for Leroy Sané compared to the 6-0 win against Schalke. “It was too risky for me with a six,” said Tuchel, explaining his caution against Leipzig, who were strong on the counter.

Their offensive only appeared when they were lagging behind. Bayern goalkeeper Yann Sommer had to save three times at short intervals against Szoboszlai (34′), Nkunku (34′) and Dani Olmo (37′). After the break, Munich were no longer compelling to move forward, while Leipzig were totally effective.
