Play football while walking? Alto Minho already prepares district selection

The first district meeting of ‘Walking Football’, where football is played without running, took place on Wednesday, in Ponte da Barca, and brought together around 70 athletes over 50 years old.

The kick-off was given for the creation of a district selection of Viana do Castelo that will compete in a national competition, scheduled for July, in Cidade do Futebol, in Oeiras.

‘Walking Football’, that is, walking football, was created in 2011 in England. It is an adapted modality of walking football, designed for people of both sexes, aged over 50 years. Running, using goalkeepers and physical contact between athletes is not allowed.

About 70 athletes participated, from teams of the “Olympics4All” project, from the municipalities of Arcos de Valdevez, Monção, Paredes de Coura, Ponte da Barca and Viana do Castelo. Monção indicated, in a statement, that it was represented by 10 senior athletes, eight men and two women.

In this meeting, it was intended to spread the new modality, through the transmission of rules and basic concepts, providing moments of learning and practice to the athletes.

With the aim of encouraging the practice of sports, integration and group interaction in favor of a healthier and more active life, the ‘Walking Football’ project aims to improve health indices and increase the social interaction of practitioners.
