His name is Andrés Aguilar, he plays as a midfielder, he is 18 years old and has just finished one of his best seasons with the Under-18 squad of Watford in England, being the undisputed starter in the U-18 Professional Development League and the FA Youth Cup. Before starting a little vacation, since he never stops training, Andrés took some time to talk with Depor. He revealed his admiration for the bicolor fans, his desire to represent us in the ‘Old Continent’ and reach the peruvian team. Also, he says that he admires the game of Christian Benavente y Christian Cuevaand whose adviser is Nolberto Solano.

Andrés, tell us about your beginnings in soccer

I was born in England, but six weeks after my birth my family had to travel to Spain. In that country I gave my first touches with the ball, although I always did it with neighborhood teams. At the age of 11 we returned to London and I continued playing for local teams, until at the age of 15 Watford scouts saw me and that’s how I came to a professional club.

That is, did you never go through academies or professional clubs during your training?

I was not given that opportunity, but it was always clear to me that I wanted to be a footballer. I knew the opportunity would come at the right time.

How was this season?

It’s been a great year. I played more than 2,000 minutes in the tournaments we participated in. This regularity allowed several European clubs, through their scouts, to notice me.

Have you already had offers?

There are proposals from France, Germany, Belgium and here in England. Now I have to sit down with my agent to analyze which one is best for me. My contract with Watford ended in June and I am a free player.

Is there a chance that you could make it to the main roster of one of the interested teams?

There are a couple of clubs where I can aspire to the first team. We also have to evaluate more aspects. Therefore, we are going to take a prudent time to make a decision.

How is your relationship with Peru?

My grandfather is Peruvian. He currently lives in Spain, but misses the country of his birth a lot. Whenever we talk, he tells me how wonderful Peru is. That is why I really want to travel there to see that beautiful land and be able to join the Peruvian team.

Have you had contact with the FPF?

Yes, from the Peruvian Football Federation they contacted my father. The intention is to call me up for the next U-20 team. They told him to be ready for the call. I decided to carry out the corresponding paperwork and now I have the Peruvian passport.

What is your feeling when being considered an option to integrate the Peruvian National Team?

It makes me very happy. It would be something impressive to represent Peru. My grandfather is getting older and older and I want to fulfill his dream of seeing me play with the Peruvian National Team.

What do you know about our selected?

Recently, I closely followed the U-17 and U-20 teams in the South American tournaments. I’ve been looking at how they play and the types of players they have.

They are two selected who did very badly. Do these bad results discourage you from wearing the national jersey?

Not at all. Rather, it makes me want to defend the Peruvian National Team more. I know that I can be very useful. I will do everything in my power to help get better results.

Which senior team players do you know?

The one I saw in person was Cristian Benavente. I remember that when I was in Spain we met in the same stadium. I saw that he was Peruvian and from that day on I started following him. Another one that I really like is Christian Cueva. The person I have spoken to on the phone is Nolberto Solano. He knows my manager and he was kind enough to chat with me and give me advice for my career. I was really fascinated by his humility. I am very grateful to him.

Is your game similar to that of Benavente or Cueva?

I think I look more like Benavente. I play as a midfielder. I’m fast, I like to play possession, always go forward and assist the strikers. I am also the owner of the set piece at Watford.

There are very few Peruvian soccer players who shine in Europe. What do you think about it?

I wish to change that. I want to be the Peruvian benchmark in European football and wear the ‘Blanquirroja’. It is one of the goals I have for the future. The idea is to show that there is Peruvian talent.
