In the fight for a place in the third round, Ostapenko lost 3-6, 6-1, 2-6 to the American tennis player Peyton Stearns. In the ranking of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), the 25-year-old Ostapenko is ranked 17th, while her rival is ranked 69th.

In singles, Ostapenko ended the tournament with 70 points.

Alona was trailing 0-2 in the first set, and the point scored in the third game did not help turn the course of the fight in her favor. Stearns increased the advantage to 5-1, while Ostapenko was superior in the next two games, but could not escape from losing the set.

Ostapenko was able to start the second set with a 2-0 lead, and another break in the fifth game gave the Latvian tennis player a 4-1 lead. Alona was unstoppable and secured the victory in the second set that lasted only half an hour.

At the beginning of the decisive third set, Stearns was superior in the first two games and increased the lead to 5-1 with two more breaks on Alona’s serve. Although Ostapenko lost one more point, Stearns did not miss the victory.

In the first round, Alona defeated the Czech Tereza Martincova (WTA 93rd).

Ostapenko will compete in the women’s doubles in a duet with her usual opponent Lyudmila Kichenok, and will also join forces with the Spanish tennis player David Vega-Hernandez in the mixed doubles.

At the French Open in 2017, Ostapenko remained undefeated and won her only Grand Slam title so far, but the other eight times her success on the clay courts of Roland Garros was much more modest. Last year Alona reached the second round and in 2020 played in the 1/16 finals, but on other occasions withdrew after losing the first game. Ostapenko is playing in the main tournament in Paris for the eighth year in a row.

The French Open, with a prize fund of 49.6 million euros, will last until June 11, when the men’s singles final is scheduled.
