The world number one skips the tennis tournament in Berlin. Behind it, however, cavorts the elite.
Nine of the top ten tennis players will compete in this year’s WTA tournament in Berlin. Although the world number one Iga Swiatek from Poland is missing from the tournament held from June 17th to 25th in the Steffi Graf Stadium of the LTTC Rot-Weiss, the entire elite is behind them, as the organizers announced on Tuesday.
Tournament director Barbara Rittner and head national coach in the German Tennis Association (DTB) is pleased that “the best in the world are very happy to come to our tournament in Berlin.”
The field of the $ 850,000 event is led by world number two Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus), who won the Grand Slam opener in Australia at the beginning of the year.
Seventh-ranked Ons Jabeur from Tunisia wants to defend the title she won last year against reigning Olympic champion Belinda Bencic. The world ranking twelfth from Switzerland is hoping for victory after two final defeats in a row in Berlin.
Also at the start is reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan, who is ranked fourth, as well as French world champion Carolina Garcia, one place behind. The two Americans Jessica Pegula as third in the world rankings and sixth Coco Gauff, eighth Maria Sakkari from Greece as well as Russian Daria Kasatkina in ninth and Czech Petra Kvitova in number ten ensure that there is more class on the pitch.
The only 19-year-old Chinese shooting star Qinwen Zheng will also be there in Berlin, as will local hero Sabine Lisicki, who will compete on her home facility via wildcard.
