NFL – Football: Patrick Mahomes is more interested in history than breaking the bank

Since signing what was at the time the most lucrative contract in NFL history, Patrick Mahomes has seen his annual salary slip to seventh among league quarterbacks.

Mahomes said Wednesday, after the Chiefs’ first week of practice ended, that he didn’t find the development worrisome.

“I’ve always said I’m more worried about the legacy and Super Bowl winners’ rings than making money right now,” he said. We see what is happening across the league, but at the same time, I will never do anything that will stop us from keeping good players around me. »

The Chiefs quarterback became the NFL’s highest-paid player in the summer of 2020 when he signed a 10-year extension worth $450 million. No player has since topped that deal in total value, but six other quarterbacks — including Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson and, most recently, Jalen Hurts and Lamar Jackson — have passed Mahomes in average salary.

Mahomes could fall further down the salary list this summer if lucrative extensions are signed by Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert, both of whom are eligible for long-term deals for the first time.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said during the offseason that the Chiefs would consider making Mahomes’ contract more attractive to him, although he didn’t give a specific timeline. Mahomes’ current deal runs until 2031.

“You just want to do anything not to hurt the other quarterbacks [financièrement], Mahomes said. Every time their contracts come in, you want to keep the bar higher.

“It’s not about being the highest paid guy, it’s not about making a ton of money. I have earned enough money to be financially secure for the rest of my life. But at the same time, you have to find that line where you make a lot of money, but you still have a lot of great players around you so you can win those Super Bowls and you can get in those big games. »

Mahomes said it was a difficult balance between the two.

“I think that’s the case for all these guys,” he said. I think you see the guys getting paid this past offseason – they’re trying to find the middle ground.

“If you look at the big guys in the league, they find that middle ground where they get paid a lot of money and still keep a lot of these big players around. I understand you look at the team and you have guys like Chris [Jones] et [L’Jarius] Sneed and even Travis [Kelce], all those guys that you have to keep around to have those great teams. But at the same time, you want to make sure you’re taking care of yourself. »
