NFL: Brock Purdy hopes to recover from his injury before the start of the season

SANTA CLARA, Calif. –San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is aiming for next week to start passing again.

The 49ers are optimistic he will be healthy enough after his offseason elbow surgery to start the season as a starter.

Purdy was on the court Tuesday, watching his teammates at the Niners’ first practice where the media were admitted this spring.

He was injured in the NFC Championship Game last January.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Purdy could start throwing a ball next week for the first time since undergoing surgery on March 10.

He should be ready to train in training camp and play when the season begins Sept. 10 in Pittsburgh.

“I’m pretty optimistic that he’ll be back in time for Week 1,” Shanahan said.

Purdy explained that his arm felt great nearly three months into his rehabilitation. He can’t wait to launch again, about a week earlier than originally planned.

But he is not ready to make predictions on his return to the game.

“We’re not trying to set a timetable to say that I’ll be ready on such and such a date. Of course it’s a goal, he said of the opening game. You want to be ready for the season. If so, so much the better. »

Purdy tore the ligament in his right elbow on the first outing in a 31-7 loss at Philadelphia on Jan. 29.

He had to wait more than a month before having surgery, due to swelling in his elbow.

Purdy went from being the last pick in the draft to a starter with the stakes of making it to the Super Bowl in an impressive first season.

He emerged victorious in his first seven starts, before losing to the Eagles.

Purdy had 1,374 passing yards with 13 touchdowns and four interceptions in the regular season.
