Newcastle United failed to increase the lead over manager Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday. ‘The Magpies’ did not go further than 2-2 at low flyer Leeds United.
Luke Ayling opened the scoring for Leeds United in the seventh minute. The defender used the rebound after a save from Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope on a Rodrigo header.
After half an hour Newcastle had the perfect opportunity to double the lead. The ball hit the spot after a foul by Joelinton, but Patrick Bamford’s penalty was saved by Pope.
Moments later it was hit on the other side. Callum Wilson converted a penalty kick after a foul by former Ajax player Maximilian Wöber. Twenty minutes before the end, Newcastle were awarded another penalty after hands from Junior Firpo, which was also used by Wilson.

Former Ajax player Kristensen gives Leeds a point
Newcastle seemed on their way to victory, but ten minutes later former Ajax player Rasmus Kristensen scored the equalizer. In injury time, Leeds was left with ten men due to a red card for Firpo in injury time. Sven Botman played the entire game with the visitors and Pascal Struijk came in for Leeds in extra time.
In extra time, a spectator tried to enter the field. He shoved trainer Eddie Howe in front of the Newcastle dugout before being overpowered by stewards.
The draw allows Manchester United to join Newcastle later in the day, who have a much better goal difference. The Ten Hag team is three points behind the number three and will play at Old Trafford against Wolverhampton Wanderers at 4 p.m. Leeds are eighteenth and therefore took an important point in the fight against relegation.
