Nacer Chadli also leaves the Red Devils: “I have to turn the page” | Red Devils

After Toby Alderweireld, Eden Hazard, Simon Mignolet and Axel Witsel, Nacer Chadli has now also closed his chapter with the Red Devils. He amassed 66 caps and 8 goals with the national team.

Witsel’s farewell also convinced Chadli to confirm his farewell. “It’s over for me anyway,” he admitted to RTBF. “I have to turn the page.”

“It’s been a great time for all of us, but the new generation is here. I’ll be following their performance closely. I hope they do better than us. My farewell is official, I just need to communicate it on the web.”

“I gave a lot of my time for Belgium and I enjoyed playing for my country with teammates who became friends. We had some great moments.”

Perhaps the best moment was his 3-2 goal against Japan, which resulted in a quarter-final at the World Cup. “Everyone talks to me about that goal. The bronze medal will stay with me forever. I am proud of what I have achieved with this group.”

He calls it “symbolic” that he is dropping out together with Witsel, another Liège resident. “I’ve known him since I was 8 years old. We played together in the youth team of Standard. Getting into the national team together was a childhood dream.”
