Laura van Leeuwen was appointed as the new general manager of MVV Maastricht on Monday. The former football star is the first female director in club history and also the only woman in charge of a club in Dutch professional football.
The 37-year-old Van Leeuwen will join the Kitchen Champion Division club, which has existed since 1902, on July 1. The former Orange international is the successor to Erik Noor, who announced his departure at the beginning of this year.
Van Leeuwen played football in the Netherlands and the United States. She comes over from Ajax, where she fulfilled several functions. She also worked for the KNVB and Sharjah FC from the United Arab Emirates.
“MVV is a wonderful club with a great history. A club with many challenges,” says Van Leeuwen. “The upward trend has clearly started. It is my job to continue it.”
Van Leeuwen is not the first female general manager in Dutch professional football. Previously, Nicole Edelenbos, among others, held the same position at Feyenoord, NEC and NAC Breda. Marianne van Leeuwen became the first female director of professional football at the KNVB in 2021.
MVV finished fifth in the regular season of the Kitchen Champion Division, which resulted in a place in the play-offs for promotion/relegation. The team of trainer Maurice Verberne will compete against NAC Breda in the first round.
