Mets and Nationals duel suspended due to rain

WASHINGTON — Saturday’s game between the New York Mets and the Nationals was called off in the third inning with Washington leading 1-0 after a 3-hour, 56-minute rain delay.

The match will resume this Sunday as part of a doubleheader with two admissions.

At 4:05 in the afternoon (2005 GMT) the match had started under a light rain that quickly worsened. However, the teams continued to play.

The Mets had runners on second and third with one out on Michael Perez’s double when the game was stopped.

After the rain stopped, park workers removed the tarp around 7 p.m. and managers Buck Showalter and Dave Martinez inspected the field while field crews continued work. At one point the fans still in the park began chanting “Let’s play baseball,” but eventually the game was called off at 8:39 p.m.

Joey Meneses hit an RBI single for the Nationals in the first inning and loaded the bases with one out. Dominic Smith, a former Mets player, let go of a 3-0 strike — the pitch looked bad — and grounded into an inning-ending double play.

The Mets have allowed runs in the first inning in seven straight games.
