Messi returns to training with PSG after his sanction for traveling to Saudi Arabia

LONDON, 8 May. (dpa/EP) –

Argentine forward Leo Messi has returned to training at Paris Saint-Germain after being sanctioned for an unauthorized trip by the club to Saudi Arabia.

The Ligue 1 entity confirmed on its official Twitter account on Monday morning that the 35-year-old Argentina international was back after being fined and suspended for making a promotional visit to the Middle Eastern country without permission.

“Leo Messi, back to training this Monday morning,” said the club’s publication, which was accompanied by a photograph of the world champion in training kit.

Messi, who is an ambassador for the Saudi Tourism Authority, was photographed in Riyadh the day after his team suffered a shock defeat to Lorient. He later revealed in a video posted to his official Instagram account that he had to make the trip for contractual reasons, having previously canceled it, and that he had assumed he had the day off.

“I wanted to make this video after everything that is happening. First of all, I have to apologize to my teammates and the club. Honestly, I thought we were going to have a free time after the game, as had been happening during the previous weeks”, he published then The Argentine in social networks.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or player joined PSG from FC Barcelona in August 2021 after the Catalan club ran into serious financial difficulties and while his return has been considered, those difficulties make it unlikely.

In recent days, he has been linked with a move to the Saudi Arabian Pro League amid reports that he could earn up to €366.46m a year.
