In last Monday’s episode, a foster family was central. After the broadcast, about three hundred people registered with Pleegzorg Nederland to orientate themselves on becoming a foster parent. Normally that is about sixty people in a comparable period.
“Those people request information via our website, after which they come into contact with a foster care organization in their area,” says the spokesperson. Normally, an average of about three quarters of those people eventually become foster parents.
It is difficult to predict whether this will also be the case with these three hundred people. “But people who now come to the conclusion, for example, that becoming a foster parent does not fit into their lives, may think about it more quickly later,” says the spokesperson. “It often happens that people who are now becoming foster parents have become interested in a campaign from a few years ago.”

Throughout the Netherlands, foster care organizations are facing a shortage of foster parents. There are currently 17,500 foster parents in total. Foster care Netherlands tries to find 3,500 new people every year, but often does not reach that number.
In the episode of Buy Without Looking it concerned foster parents Paul and Kim, who handed over the buying of a house because they were unable to do it themselves. According to the spokesperson, the episode showed a clear and realistic picture of foster parenthood. “The more of that honest and real attention, the better.”
