Mats Hummels has extended his expiring contract with BVB by another year. “Everyone knows how much fun I have playing at Signal Iduna Park with our fantastic fans. I didn’t take the decision lightly. It was a long process of deliberation. Now, at the end of the season, I can say: I have still really up for another year”, he is quoted as saying in a statement from the leader of the table.
Hummels has been playing for Dortmund again since 2019. The 34-year-old had previously had a three-year interlude at FC Bayern, from which he first came to BVB in 2009. The 2014 world champion is the only player from the current squad who wore the BVB jersey at the last championship in 2012 – on Saturday he could hold up the trophy as Borussia for the third time. He celebrated four more championships with Bayern. He has played 468 of his 586 competitive games for Dortmund on the pitch.
BVB and Mats simply belong together.
Hummels made 29 appearances for Borussia this season, scoring one goal. Most recently, the defender, who is strong in the air, has shown strong performances, earning the kicker mark of 1.5 in the home games against Frankfurt (4-0) and Wolfsburg (6-0) and was recently awarded for the away game in Augsburg (3-0 ), in which he had to be replaced, the grade 2.
“I am very pleased that Mats Hummels is staying at Borussia Dortmund for another year. He identifies very closely with our club. BVB and Mats simply belong together,” says Hans-Joachim Watzke, CEO. Sports director Sebastian Kehl, who recently called for a decision before the end of the season, adds: “It’s very good that Mats, with his experience and leadership skills, will still be available to our young team in the coming season.”
Just recently, another veteran, Marco Reus, extended his contract by a year.
