Oliver Glasner and Eintracht Frankfurt will go their separate ways at the end of the season. After a short-term crisis summit with the Upper Austrian and sports director Markus Krösche, the decision was made. Glasner is to remain in office until the cup final on June 3 against RB Leipzig.

The 48-year-old has a contract with Eintracht that runs until the summer of 2024. In the previous season, Glasner had won the Europa League with the club and thus made it into the Champions League for the first time. A year later, the premature separation takes place. In Frankfurt, Dino Toppmöller and Salzburg coach Matthias Jaissle are considered candidates for a possible successor. Sturm coach Christian Ilzer was also mentioned. Toppmöller is considered a top candidate for the post, Julian Nagelsmann’s former assistant coach is said to have already held talks with the sporting management of Eintracht.

The traditional club is currently in crisis. The Frankfurters are already ten rounds without a win, in the Bundesliga they are only in ninth place three games before the end of the season. At 1: 3 at Hoffenheim Glasner lost his temper at the weekend. On the lawn, he saw the red card for lack of discipline, and in the press conference he launched into an angry speech. Board spokesman Axel Hellmann described the appearance the day after as inappropriate.

In the spring, Eintracht wanted to extend the contract with Glasner beyond 2024. In the background, according to “Bild”, there are still disagreements with Krösche about the squad design. In the manager’s view, the squad is not sufficiently well-staffed to achieve the qualification expected by the club for international competition via the league.

“Coast is not acceptable”

With a cup triumph and the associated leap into the Europa League, Eintracht could save the season and Glasner go with another trophy. However, it cannot be ruled out that there will be a big bang before the finale. “We cannot accept that we are letting the season stall,” Hellmann warned recently. If the next appearances against Mainz, Schalke and Freiburg also fail, the separation could be completed before the Berlin final.
