Inter wins the LAI Global Cup

The Inter-University Athletic League (LAI) announced this Monday that the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico (UIPR) won the Global Cup with 911 points. However, the past three-time champions, the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) of Mayagüez, did not release the championship of the women’s branch, avoiding the total cup of the UIPR.

After the 2023 Sports Festival and the sum of all the points from both semesters, August-December and January-May, of all the LAI sports, the Tigres and Tigresas became the global champions for the sum of 477 points in the male branch, where they were also proclaimed monarchs, and the 434 points of the female branch that gave them the runner-up.

The Tigers and the Tigresses were represented in the “top 4” of sports: taekwondo, weightlifting, short pool, cross country, table tennis, beach volleyball, basketball, Swimming Jousts, Olympic wrestling, volleyball, soccer (both branches ), field tennis, relay championships, women’s softball, judo and track and field jousting. Where they did not compete was in cheerleading and dancing. Among the memorable victories of the UIPR is the return to the top of both branches in the Athletics Jousts 2023, the bichampionship of the female branch in judo, the dominance in cross country and the revalidation in baseball.

For their part, the past global champions of the LAI for three consecutive years, the Juanas and the Tarzanes of the UPR of Mayagüez, fell to second collective place with 828 points.

In the LAI, in addition to rewarding the sum of the two branches, performance by genre is recognized. That is why the UPR of Mayagüez wins the trophy with its Juanas by adding 438 points, surpassing the UIPR by four “chavitos”. In men, the team from Mayagüez finished third with 390 points.

The third overall position was for the Ana G. Méndez University (UAGM). He totaled 784 points of the work done in the female branch of 388 points (third place) and 396 points in the males (runners-up).

The UPR of Río Piedra this year was not in the medal table, but it was in the best four institutions with 759 points (381 women and 378 men).

Sagrado revalidation in the Commissioner’s Cup

Universidad del Sagrado Corazón won the Commissioner’s Cup among universities with 6,000 or fewer students enrolled. Among his outstanding performances is the sixth championship of the Swimming Jousts in the women’s branch and the men’s beach volleyball championship.

UPR Bayamón completed the medal table with 276 points and UPR Arecibo added 214 points, thus taking second and third place respectively.
