Inter Milan wins cup after beating Fiorentina in final

Inter Milan got in the mood for the final of the Champions League in two and a half weeks by winning the Italian soccer cup.

Coach Simone Inzaghi’s team beat AC Fiorentina 2-1 (2-1) in the Coppa Italia final on Wednesday. World champion Lautaro Martínez scored two goals and was the match winner (29th/37th minute) for the Milan team, who repeated their cup success from the previous year.

In the Olympic Stadium in Rome, Conference League finalists Florence got off to a better start and took the lead in the 3rd minute through former Stuttgart player Nicolás González. The favorite from Milan, who is playing against Manchester City for the European football crown on June 10 in Istanbul (9 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the Champions League, on ZDF and on DAZN), turned the game around before the break.

It remained tense until the final whistle, because Florence bravely pushed for an equalizer. The Inter-Defensive, which is otherwise so solid, kept coming under pressure, but former Frankfurter Luka Jovic, among others, missed the equalizer twice. In the end, Inter saved themselves for their ninth cup success.

Florence can still win a title this season against West Ham United on June 7 in the final of the Conference League (9 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the Conference League and on Sky) – the game will take place in Prague. Three days later it’s Inter’s turn.
