“I know I was very lucky”

Raquel Miguéns attends us from the hospital three days after undergoing surgery in which they removed a tumor that had been in her brain for years. “Everything went well”, he affirms with a tired voice but with the satisfaction of someone who sees the light at the end of a very long tunnel. The woman from Estrada, known for being one of the most successful athletes in sports from Estrada, has experienced a long ordeal up to now. Gone are numerous doctors and tests without results. Nothing was useful to find the answer to some physical problems that had been dragging on for two years and that were getting worse every day. Finally, it was an endocrine that ended up finding the cause, a tumor that prevented the pituitary gland from working as it should and to which he said goodbye last Tuesday.

The native of Estrada posted a video on her social networks that same day that soon went viral. Actually, it was a recording that she made the day before and that she asked to be shared once the operation was successfully completed. In this long recording, the badminton player from Estrada recounted in detail her long and hard pilgrimage to that operating room, a way of the cross caused by the constant physical problems that she had been suffering from.

“Today I want to tell something, something that I have been dealing with for more than two years and that in a little while I will go down to solve it. It is my story and I want to make you part of it. If someone is going through something similar, I hope it helps them. With this presentation begins a story that begins in March 2021 when he decides to remove the contraceptive ring. “She had been on hormones for eleven years and knew that my body was not right. For a long time she had been suffering from tiredness and thyroid problems even though she did not have it. That’s why I decided to stop hormonal. Doing it was a revelation because that discomfort, the migraines and the constant tiredness and sleepiness left ”, she recalls.

However, there began to be problems. “Shortly after other symptoms appeared, among them the loss of the rule,” he explains. He waited months as the doctors told him, but the situation did not improve. “New things were appearing. Experience radical changes. I gained ten kilos at once, my joints ached and I was losing sight in my right eye”. He went to five gynecologists and they all told him that he was fine or that it could be early menopause.

The solution to his problem ended up coming from an endocrinologist, who, after seeing his analysis, ordered him to do head tests. That’s when the tumor was discovered that was crushing his pituitary gland and everything around it, including the optic nerve.

“I know that I was very lucky because no one related what I had to a tumor in my head”, affirms the Estradense woman after undergoing the operation in which that tumor was removed. Finally, thanks to her position, it was not necessary to open his head, but rather they extracted him through his nose. “It was all very fast and the recovery is minor,” says Miguéns, who already notes that she recovered some vision. “I don’t know what will happen from here but I’m going to enjoy it to the fullest”.

An extensive track record with 17 Galician titles

The captain of Ravachol de Pontevedra has an enviable sporting career, with more than twenty years of badminton behind her. She has been absolute Galician champion until her on 17 occasions, which places her at the same level as legends such as Rafael Vázquez or Aida Rodríguez. In the national league, she has been in different teams throughout her career, alternating between the Division of Honor and the First National. In recent years, she was three times senior Spanish champion, also adding four silver and two bronze medals. She trained in the lower categories of Club Badminton A Estrada, she later went through teams like Oviedo, Casablanca, Triana and Clear Madrid. “I would like to be in the Senior Spanish Championship in October,” says the Estradense, who left the hospital yesterday afternoon. “Good manners cannot be lost and one of them is badmintonhe says.
