“It looks very much like it,” said sports director Klemens Hartenbach on Saturday at the season finale of the Breisgauer at Eintracht Frankfurt on “Sky”. Mark Flekken is said to be in agreement with Brentford FC. Hartenbach does not know “whether everything is already signed”, but confirmed that this is the plan.
At the end of March, kicker reported exclusively on the Englishman’s interest in the 29-year-old. The transfer flushes the Freiburgers 13 million euros into the coffers, this sum was anchored as an exit clause in his contract, which was only extended in September 2022.
Late bloomer in Freiburg
Flekken came to the Black Forest from Duisburg for two million euros in 2018 and then blossomed into a top goalkeeper. However, it took the keeper a while to reach his current level. Only in 2021/22 did he manage to become number 1 in the Freiburg box. In the meantime, the almost 30-year-old has also made the leap into the Dutch national team.
He played a total of 95 games for Freiburg, in the current season he played in each of the 34 Bundesliga games and to date (as of matchday 33) he has a kicker grade point average of 2.82. In total, he conceded 42 goals this season, but also kept 13 clean sheets – a league best.
Atubolu becomes successor
Flekken’s successor at SC has already been determined, as Hartenbach confirmed. U-21 international goalkeeper Noah Atubolu rises from reserve keeper to the new number 1. The 1.90 m tall home-grown player impressed in the third division in the second team and enjoys the trust of the club bosses. So far, the 21-year-old has made three appearances in the top eleven (once in the Europa League, twice in the DFB Cup).
