“There will no longer be a season that satisfies us”

FC Bayern is threatened with the first untitled season in eleven years. Even a win at 1. FC Köln on the last day of the game may not be enough. Before the game Thomas Tuchel practices self-criticism and makes clear demands on the players.
Thomas Tuchel didn’t even talk around it. “There will no longer be a season that satisfies us, in terms of the number of points and the way we play,” said the FC Bayern coach at a press conference in the club’s headquarters on Säbener Strasse on Friday afternoon.
This was followed by the final training before the last game of the season in the Bundesliga at 1. FC Köln on Saturday (3.30 p.m., Sky). If Borussia Dortmund wins the game played at the same time against 1. FSV Mainz 05, Bayern will end a season without a title for the first time in eleven years. “We are not satisfied with the results. It’s our job to play more dominantly, faster and to combine things more fluently, to play with fewer mistakes,” said Tuchel, looking at the goals for the future.
Although it can no longer be a good season, “we have to run to the end, regardless of how things are in the other places. When you work for FC Bayern, you always have to give everything until the final whistle,” emphasized the coach. “Unfortunately we don’t need to look at the other game anymore. It’s crystal clear for us: we have to win, then we can see. We need support.”
Tuchel also said: “It is extremely difficult to score and win goals in Cologne. We need complete focus and small success stories. We need our quality from the first second and we can’t afford to lose concentration. I expect an emotional stadium and an emotional opponent who runs an awful lot, who presses extremely high.”
Tuchel: “Anything can happen”
WELT asked Tuchel: Does he hope that Dortmund is not prepared for the situation of finally being able to win a championship title again and is still losing its lead in the table? The 49-year-old’s response: “Anything can happen, in any game. There just has to be a little inattention. There are no messages from me to BVB either. We have enough to do for ourselves. We’ve blundered enough times to be in this position, that’s our responsibility.”
If Mainz wins, however, according to Tuchel, Bayern will not give a thank you gift. “We delivered the gift,” said the coach, alluding to Bayern’s 3-1 defeat in the league game in Mainz in early May.
Should it be an untitled season, how does he feel responsible for that? Tuchel only took over the team at the end of March from his predecessor Julian Nagelsmann, who had been released. Tuchel replied: “When you’re on the sidelines, you’re fully responsible. Once I sign and I’m in training, I’m in charge.”
The players are ready to give everything again in Cologne. Tuchel has set himself a clear goal for the future: “Säbener Strasse must be a haven for the players. There must be a working atmosphere where everyone is happy to come. A productive rest. No matter what happens in your private life, with the national team or anywhere else. Where everyone knows: Here I am protected, challenged and supported.”
Kahn’s future will be decided on Tuesday
Means: This season, from Tuchel’s point of view, it was far too restless in the club. The supervisory board of FC Bayern meets Tuesday in the Munich stadium, the powerful body around honorary president Uli Hoeneß will also decide on the future of CEO Oliver Kahn and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic.
“They are my key contacts,” said Tuchel on Friday afternoon. “We are in the planning stage, the season doesn’t allow us to plan very far ahead. The swings in our performance were too great. It also took up my energy to work in the here and now. We try to make the best decisions in the interests of the club.”
He has “no influence” on the meeting of the supervisory board, so it is best for him to get rid of it. “There’s little point in worrying about it.”
