You didn’t have to look for Carlo Brecel in the Crucible. He preferred to look in the wings. “I never look into the room,” he admits. “The Crucible is so small and the cameras are always looking for you. I prefer to walk around in between.”
But when Luca took his 18th and decisive frame in the World Cup final, father Brecel did walk into the Crucible Theater. A warm embrace followed. “I told him: we have worked hard for this as a ‘little man’ for so many years. This is well deserved.”
“Luca plays a very different kind of snooker, unorthodox. He is bringing a new wind to the snooker world, he was made for it. I hope he can continue like this.”
Still, there will be some rest for Brecel first, because the season is over. “He can relax a bit first. Then he just has to continue what he’s doing now.”
Also going out and partying in between? “I did tell him not to say such things, but it had already been sent out into the world,” said father Brecel. “It’s not that Luca is a drinking organ who sits in a cafe every day.”
With his world title in his pocket, Brecel also seems to be an outspoken candidate for the title of Sportsman of the Year. “It would be a nice reward,” concludes his father.
