Elementary school gymnasium ceiling cracked… 14 teachers and students injured

There was an accident where a structure attached to the ceiling collapsed at an elementary school gymnasium in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do.

At the time, a physical education class was in progress in the gymnasium, and fourteen teachers and students were injured.

Dozens of gypsum boards are falling in front of the gym stage.

Badminton balls and skipping ropes are scattered around the cracked and shattered gypsum board.

At around 12:20 p.m. today, dozens of gypsum boards that were vertically attached to the 15m high ceiling collapsed in an elementary school gymnasium in Yeosu, South Jeolla Province.

Below, a physical education teacher and about 20 3rd grade students were having a badminton class.

A teacher and students in PE class were injured in the accident and taken to the hospital.

A teacher in her 50s was seriously injured with a broken bone around her eye, and 13 students were also injured.

The students were shocked by the sudden accident, and the school shortened the class to four periods and sent all students home.

Parents rushed to the school in shock.

“Suddenly, the children came out and the 119 ambulance came and I knew it then.”

This gym was completed in 2017.

The school said there were no signs of an accident and there were no problems during a safety inspection last March.

“It hasn’t been long since I built it, so how do I know that? I only do safety checks.”

The education authorities decided to immediately close the gym and provide counseling support for students and faculty.

The police plan to investigate the construction companies and others for poor construction.
