SFor more than a century, the French Open Tennis Championships have been the most important clay-court tournament in the world. For several days, the French Open has also been the largest political stage on which athletes negotiate the world’s armed conflicts.
Even before the tournament started, it was to be expected that the struggle between the Ukrainian players and the pros from Russia and Belarus would continue in Paris. What was surprising, however, was how unprepared and merciless spectators booed Ukraine’s Marta Kostjuk after she refused to shake hands with her Belarusian opponent Aryna Sabalenka, as she had done since the attack on her homeland.
