Dickinson explains why he transferred to Kansas

Dickinson seemed to indicate that a transfer out of Michigan was in his best interest financially.

Former Michigan star Hunter Dickinson committed to Kansas earlier this month in what may be the biggest transfer of the NIL era. In a recent appearance on his Roundball podcast, Dickinson hinted that money played a big part in his decision.

“People who hate me would quit their job right now for a $10,000 raise,” Dickinson said. “In Michigan, I made less than six figures. I made less than six figures in Michigan for the year.”

Dickinson was a three-time All-Big Ten in three seasons with the Wolverines. He averaged 18.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game as a junior in 2022-23 and finished fourth in the conference in points, rebounds and blocks per game.

After entering the portal earlier this spring, Dickinson immediately became the most sought after transfer on the market. Kansas, Kentucky, Villanova, Georgetown, Kentucky, Maryland, and several other programs competed for their services. Returning to Michigan might have been an option, but ultimately leaving Ann Arbor was what he felt was best for him and his career.

“I really didn’t want to leave [de Michigan]. I just felt like it was the best decision for me,” Dickinson said. “I had a legacy there and I basically left it to try to be selfish and do what’s best for myself and my career, not what’s best for other people’s careers.”

By choosing Kansas, Dickinson will play for Hall of Fame coach Bill Self and a Jayhawks team that could be among the best in the country next season. Kansas sits atop Gary Parrish’s latest Top 25 and 1 and returns to Dajuan Harris and KJ Adams. Also entering is a top-10 recruiting class led by former five-star Elmarko Jackson and former McDonald’s All-American Arterio Morris.
