Cuba with two badminton players to Central Caribbean Games

According to the national commissioner of the discipline, Orlando Cala, both teams won the controls to make up the national team for the Central Caribbean event, to be held from June 23 to July 8.

In the women’s sector, Oropesa had a strong opponent in Yeily Ortiz, but the chosen one surpassed her on the five occasions they met to define the place.

«We do not include more athletes due to their absence from international events scoring for the ranking. Instead, the confirmation of two participants in the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games is expected,” the manager told Jit.

These aspirations are supported by the results obtained in the Giraldilla tournament in Havana and the Pan-American championship held in Jamaica.

“We are happy with the team for how it responded in the continental fight on the neighboring island. The women’s double of Oropesa and Ortiz advanced two rounds and came from fifth to eighth places after losing in the quarterfinals against the Pan-American champions, but they played a good match”, she recalled.

According to Cala, since they did not have a good ranking, in the initial round the Cubans lost against the main teams in both singles and doubles. Even so, the mixed one was among the first 16.

“We are satisfied to a certain extent by the positive achievements that have given us points for qualifying for the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. By our accounts we should have four athletes, two of each sex, with great chances of winning the position,” he stressed.

Headed by Oropesa and Herrera, the Cuban team has been training in the city of Pinar del Río, 155.08 kilometers east of here, since March, where they have sufficient support. They work all week, except Wednesday, dedicated to studies.
