Cuba with 3×3 basketball at the Special Olympics World Games

Roberkis Padilla, Keimer Guindo, Hendri Emilio Payton (captain), Jorge Miguel José and Luis Enrique Peña make up the team, the methodologist in charge of the special Olympics in the eastern province of Guantánano, Zulema Sterling, told this outlet.

The athletes will be directed by Onel Guilarte, who has international experience from his attendance at the Special Central American Games in Panama 2012 in this sport.

Guilarte expressed that the squad will travel to this capital from Guantánamo to carry out a training base prior to its transfer to Germany on May 22.

“During training in Havana we will hold meetings with different teams in order to arrive better prepared for this high-level event,” he said.

“We are going to represent Cuba with dignity and occupy a good place, but if it is not achieved, we will put into effect the slogan of the Special Olympics movement: I want to win, but if I cannot win, I want to be brave in the attempt,” he added.

The deputy director of Physical Education and Sports for all in Guantanamo, Giorlis Mustelier, highlighted the care provided for the team’s preparation and pointed out that the Cuban people will be waiting for him upon his return regardless of the competitive result.

For the first time, Cuba will participate in basketball in a Special Olympics World Games.

However, the delegation from the largest of the Antilles will reach 21 members plus those who practice athletics, badminton and weightlifting, who will also be gathered from May 22 at the Panama Solidarity School in the capital.

According to the organizers, Berlin 2023 will host seven thousand athletes from 190 delegations, who will compete for nine days under the motto Together we will have fun and together we will change the world. They will have the support of 20 thousand volunteers.

The event is the world’s largest inclusive sporting event, celebrating diversity and its power to unite people from all walks of life.
