Congressional staff from Virginia Connelly attacked with a baseball bat

Latest news:

A person armed with a baseball bat attacked two congressional staffers Monday in a district office in Northern Virginia after they demanded to speak to Rep. Gerry Connolly, the congressman said in a statement.

Mr Connolly, a Democrat, said the two of his staff were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Fairfax City Police said on Twitter that one individual was in custody. The suspect’s name was not immediately released.

“I have the best team in Congress. My district office staff make themselves available to members and members of the public every day,” Connolly said in a statement. “The thought that someone could take advantage of the accessibility of my staff to commit an act of violence is inconceivable and devastating.”

Mr. Connolly represents a swathe of the Northern Virginia suburbs west of Washington, DC. He was first elected to Congress in 2008.

The attack comes amid an increase in threats and violent political speeches against members of Congress in recent years.

The motive is not yet known.
