Partly due to problems with his car, Max Verstappen recorded the sixth fastest time in the first free practice session for the Monaco Grand Prix on Friday. Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz clocked the fastest time in the session, which was cut short due to a red flag.
Verstappen complained about problems with his Red Bull from the start. The two-time world champion could not find enough speed. The Dutchman had to admit more than eight tenths to Sainz (1.13.372).
Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) completed the top three with 1.13.710 and 1.14.035 respectively. Sergio Pérez, Verstappen’s teammate, clocked the fourth fastest time. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) had to settle for fifth place. Nyck de Vries (AlphaTauri) was sixteenth.
The first free practice had two red flags. The session was first halted due to track debris following a crash by Nico Hülkenberg van Haas. At the end, Alexander Albon (Williams) made a mistake, so that the session was already over with a few minutes to go.

Verstappen defends lead over Pérez
The second free practice is scheduled for 5 p.m. Qualifying starts on Saturday at 4 p.m. The race will start at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
The last edition in Monaco was won by Pérez. The Mexican left Sainz and Verstappen behind in a rainy race. Verstappen won the race in the principality for the first time in 2021.
World Cup leader Verstappen has a fourteen-point lead over Pérez. Last week, the Grand Prix of Emilia-Romagna was canceled due to the storm in Italy.
