End of the season at BG Göttingen: What made this season particularly memorable

Goettingen’s Mark Smith celebrates after one of the BG’s many victories.

Göttingen. The BG Göttingen had set itself an ambitious goal this season with participation in the playoffs. After all, the violets in the basketball league have a comparatively small budget. Hats off to how confidently the team managed to make it into the postseason. Despite all the adversities, it was one of the most successful seasons in the history of the BG, which had previously only twice won more in a Bundesliga main round.

There’s no question it’s been a memorable season for the violets. The three-month closure of the home ground S-Arena led to a crazy schedule. First there were only two games in six weeks, followed by an unbelievable twelve games in five weeks. But the team and the coaching staff dealt with it professionally. The exceptional situation was accepted without complaining and mastered brilliantly. And the good in the bad: With the return to the locomotive hall, there were two extra basketball festivals.

BG Göttingen: Team unity is the trump card

The unity of the team was impressive. There was no big star that was always the focus, but someone else always took the lead. The opponents could hardly adjust to the violets. In addition, some players made impressive progress – for example Till Pape and Javon Bess, to name just two players.

Of course, coach Roel Moors has a big part in the success. He formed this team, saw the potential in the players and repeatedly pushed them to the limit of their performance. The reward for the Belgian was second place in the Coach of the Year poll. Very deserved. The reward for the team and the entire BG, which mastered all difficult situations both on and off the field, was the first playoff participation in twelve years. Just as deserved.

BG Göttingen: There was one drop of bitterness

The only drop of bitterness: In the end, only one win was missing to avoid one of the three top teams in the league with fifth place in the main round. This was especially possible on the last matchday against Frankfurt. In the playoffs there would have been even more potential against Oldenburg as an opponent. The violets offered FC Bayern Munich a big fight in the quarter-final series, but then they reached their limits against the star ensemble and were eliminated 0:3. But that doesn’t detract from the strong season.

The violets are now on their summer break, but the fans won’t get bored. Planning for the new season is underway. The most important question is: What will become of the successful coach Roel Moors? Is he going? Or does he stay? There are exciting weeks ahead of the BG.
