This is crazy again! In front of 3,447 spectators in the sold-out hall, BG Göttingen also won 83:75 (44:41) against FC Bayern Munich Basketball and continued to hold fifth place in the basketball league.

Göttingen – The violets win all four quarters, tearing the fans to storms of applause. A crazy game, a crazy win. The S-Arena is completely upside down.

Big break on Sunday on the 32nd match day: MagentaSport brought the big cutlery to the “CourtsideLive” broadcast. Rob Edwards is back on the team for the violets.

Bayern coach Andrea Trincheri easily leaves eight men out of his squad, including his stars Cassius Winston, Othello Hunter and Corey Walden.

And prominent guests are also there: national coach Gordon Herbert is honored, as well as the father of the injured Max Besselink. And also there: Ivan Martinovic, first division handball player at MT Melsungen, formerly Hannover-Burgdorf, and his teammate Dimitri Ignatow.

A furious start for the violets in this playoff foretaste: Crandall and Pape by three to make it 5-0, Frey with free throws to make it 7-0. Only then does Ognjen Jaramaz meet and FC Bayern Basketball slowly gets going. Three by Nils Giffey, but Harald Frey saves with a three-point game to make it 12:10. Munich manages the first lead at 14:12 through Paul Zipser. But the BG keeps the match tight and doesn’t let Bayern pull away, even if Zylan Cheatham, who has been signed for Augustine Rubit, smashes two dunks into the Göttingen team and Andi Obst hits his first three-pointer in a dreamlike manner. But Rob Edwards can do it too: first a three, then the 24:22 at the end of the quarter. Strong performance until then from the violets!

In the second quarter, the Göttinger keep up and stand up to the big favorites. After 13:30 minutes, Bayern is 31:27 ahead before Freddie Gillespie extends the lead to 36:29. The flow of play at the BG has come to a standstill, but Crandall and Pape with free throws reduce the gap to 33:36. Frey even provided the 35:36 connection, enthusiastically applauded by the BG fans. And Javon Bess succeeds in changing the lead – by three to 38:36. But Munich also countered with Obst and Giffey to 41:38. And then Bess in action again: Second three to equalize 41:41, the spectators are ripped off their seats. And they stop right away, because Rayshaun Hammonds scores to 43:41, gets fouled and also converts the extra free throw to 44:41 at halftime. Balanced stats at break, but 18:12 rebounds, they also help BG lead at break. It’s good to continue like this!

At the beginning of the second half it becomes a battle of attrition. Few points, hard duels. “Take off the Bavarians’ lederhosen,” chanted the fans – it was inevitable. But Geno Crandall certainly doesn’t understand – but he is strong on the floor, an outstanding game by the former English double MVP.

Then the violets are 56:48 ahead. Trinchieri puffs out his cheeks. Nick Weiler-Babb with a three for Bayern, Mark Smith counters with a three to make it 59:51. With 59:54 we go into the quarter break after 30 minutes. As always, it remains exciting at the BG, everything is possible for the BG.

Through Frey, the BG is 63:56 ahead, but Bayern come. Unsportsmanlike foul by Frey, Jaramaz converts the free throws and a second to 63:63. Next change of lead: Giffey throws in for Bayern to make it 66:65, Crandall concedes his fourth foul. Bayern cool, Gillespie netted to make it 70:65, but Bess plucked up courage: threesome to make it 68:70, excitement again for the umpteenth time, thriller time to the power of three in the S-Arena!

And it gets even better! Pape three-pointer to 73:70, technical foul against Jaramaz, Smith free-throw to 74:70. Possession of BG and Dreier Frey to 77:70, the hall boils, escalates completely. Two free throws by Frey to make it 79:70.

But it gets tight again: Giffey hits four free throws to make it 79:75 after Pape is out with the fifth foul. Time-out BG with 38.9 seconds left on the clock. Fifth foul Crandall – bitter. it does not matter anyway. The BG can no longer take this super victory. Jaramaz misses a free throw. Bayern has to foul. Bess scores 81:75. Next foul Munich (last eleven wins in a row). Bess again for 83:75. The BG powerhouse has nerves of steel. There’s the thing! The BG actually took off the Bavarians’ lederhosen!

Coach Roel Moors: “That was our best defensive performance this season! The effort and energy were right. I want my players to enjoy this win for a few hours.”

More is not possible, because Bonn is coming on Tuesday. The table leader with 16 wins in a row.

BG: Hammonds 6, Edwards 7/of which 1 three, Frey 18/1, Crandall 14, Boakye, Smith 13/2, Ani, Mönninghoff, Kamp 2, Pape 10/2, Bess 13/3, Giotis.

Bayern Munich: Giffey 14/1, Jaramaz 14/2, Gillespie 13, Weiler-Babb 6, Seeley 2, Bonga 5, Obst 6, Zipser 5, Kharcenkow 3, Cheatham 7. (Helnut Anschütz and Walter Gleitze/gsd)
