Light and shadow continue to determine the normal round of the German baseball champion Bonn Capitals. After the sovereign double victory on Father’s Day at the Cologne Cardinals, the team of player-coach Wilson Lee had to be satisfied with a victory in games three and four against Cologne. The Capitals answered the unexpectedly clear 1:7 defeat on Saturday in front of their home crowd with a 5:3 win.
In the table, Bonn slipped to second place behind the Paderborn Untouchables. “We were really bad in all parts of the team on Saturday,” said Lee after the 1:7. “As soon as we see progress, we tear them all down again. We have to make further adjustments and go onto the pitch with more energy and spirit,” demanded the Bonn player-coach.
Bonn manages a run late
The Capitals’ strong offensive on Ascension Day was unrecognizable in game three of the series in Cologne. Although the Cardinals had a very good pitcher on the mound in Max Beatty, that didn’t just explain the poor record of just five hits and one run.
Right from the start, Cologne extended their lead to 6-0 in the seventh inning against Bonn’s pitcher Lee, who was hardly supported by a weak field defence. It was only in the eighth inning that Bonn managed a run that at least gave hope for improvement. But Beatty, who threw the whole game, kept the Bonn offensive in check. Only Danny Lankhorst scored twice, otherwise the power hitters on the Capitals side didn’t ignite. The clear defeat could no longer be prevented.
Jan Jacob celebrates his debut after the end of his career
It should go better on Sunday in front of our own audience. However, shortly before the game it became clear that Bonn’s regular pitcher Sascha Koch would not get fit in time. Since all the other pitchers had already been in action several times, Jan Jacob made his debut as a starting pitcher. The experienced Bundesliga outfielder ended his career a few years ago and only occasionally plays in the second team. Now he suddenly stood on the throwing mound and did his job very well. He kept the Cardinals’ offense at bay into the fifth inning, only allowing two points in the sixth inning. By then, the Capitals were already leading 4-0 after scoring four runs in the first inning. But after that, the runners on the bases couldn’t be beaten home again. Only Anthony Rodriguez-Klinzing made all five attempts on the base, including a double and a triple.
A mixed feeling remains
The young outfielder is one of the Capitals’ college players and has just returned to Bonn for the semester break. Eric Brenk and Daniel Sanchez, who also scored the fifth run, recorded two hits each. On the mound, Brenk brought the game home for the Capitals. So it remains a mixed feeling. “We will work harder in training and try to steer the mindset in the right direction. Today Anthony showed what makes him special. He was keen to play and did an outstanding job.”
