Badminton boss sees Denmark’s World Cup quarter-final against Malaysia as fifty-fifty

On Friday, Denmark can secure medals at the Sudirman Cup, which is the WC for mixed teams, for the first time since 2013.

If the Danes beat Malaysia in their quarter-final, the team will thus be guaranteed a semi-final and at least bronze medals at the tournament, which is held in China.

Thursday’s draw was good for Denmark, acknowledges Badminton Denmark’s sports director, Jens Meibom, who declares himself “really satisfied”.

“We wanted to face Malaysia or Thailand. We just wanted to avoid South Korea, and we did. We also came in the opposite half to China, which in the long run can be fine.”

“But it’s about beating Malaysia in the first place. And I think we have a good opportunity for that. I see it as fifty-fifty. We have an opportunity in all five games, which we don’t want against all opponents , so we are very much looking forward to that.”

Denmark finished second in its opening group after a 0-5 defeat to favorites China on Thursday in a match where both were guaranteed advance in advance.

Of course, it did not provide optimal conditions in the draw, but Denmark got both an attractive opponent and the best possible conditions.

The quarter-finals take place from 11 o’clock Danish time and 5 o’clock local time, and Denmark was thus placed in the late half. Rather than having to play seven hours earlier.

This pleases Meibom, who, according to his own statement, lobbied all week for it to be this way.

“It gives more time for recovery and we’ve also played all our other games at 5pm so we can keep the same rhythm in terms of going to bed and so on.”

“It’s a huge advantage for us that it was successful, and it’s also the right sporting thing, I think, so I’m really satisfied with that,” says the sports manager.
