adding champions to a team… is a loser

Last February 6th the Dallas Mavericks were 6th in the ranking of the Western Conference of the NBA, with a balance of games won / lost of 29/26. Above all they had in the team Luka Donciccapable of putting one on the scoresheet in almost every game triple double (over 10 between points, rebounds and assists) with peaks of 60 points scored in one game.

In short they seemed very fast towards access to the playoffsbecause it’s enough to finish in the top 6 in the standings, or at worst towards the play-ins, where it’s enough to finish in the top 10.

To reinforce the concept, Dallas executives signed on to the market Kyrie Irving, an established champion. Their calculation was simple: Doncic averaged 33 points per game, Irving 27, (the calculation did Angelo Carotenuto on the Republic paper of April 12) adding the 2, the team started with an advantage of 60 points every time it took the field.

The first game that the 2 played together seemed to confirm the expectations: the couple scored 51 points (the Sky website talked about it, at the link: https://sport.sky.it/nba/2023/02/24/dallas-mavericks-los-angeles-lakers-nba-tv-streaming) and won the game.

But then things got worse.

By March, with 10 games left in the regular season, the winning record had deteriorated to 36/36 (split at 7/10). In April the collapse: partial of 2/10, total of 38/44 and 11th position in the Conference ranking (the ranking is visible on the NBA website, at the link: https://it.global.nba.com/standings/). Out of everything.

Packing champions into a team to win the title is an old idea from the NBA, and beyond. And it almost always worked.

To say, in the 80s of the dualism Los Angeles Lakers-Boston Celticsin Los Angeles played Magic Johnson, but together with Kareem Abdul Jabbar. And Boston was the team of Larry Bird, ma insieme a Robert Parish e a Kevin McHale.

In the 90s the Chicago Bulls won 6 titles Michael Jordan, but together with Dennis Rodman, Scottie Pippen

Etc.

Also won titles, in the following years, squadrons in which the stars fought with each other, such as i Lakers di Kobe Bryant e Shaquille O’Neil, but then on the field they were so strong that the opposing teams could not keep them.

Only a few years have passed, but the rule seems to no longer apply, or in any case less and less. One star in the team is enough to win.
