A tennis promise dies in a traffic accident

The young promise of American tennis, Drew Hassenbein (14 years old), died on Wednesday night when he was traveling on the Long Island highway (New York, USA). The youngster was already present in the draw prior to the 2021 US Open final, in which Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev faced each other. He was number 38 in the USTA rankings. The car in which he was traveling with three friends was hit by a drunk driver, who tried to flee, although he could be arrested moments later. Of the four occupants of the vehicle, two are hospitalized with injuries, and the third, his friend, also a tennis player, Ethan Falkowitz, died instantly.

The defendant had a criminal record since 2006, according to what his lawyer James Kousouros told the Newsday. He is charged with first-degree vehicular manslaughter, second-degree manslaughter, leaving the scene of a fatal car accident and driving while intoxicated, as well as two counts of second-degree assault, police announced.
