Newcastle’s qualification for the Champions League is official, and with it begins a summer of transfers that can be very intense. The Saudi Arabian project in the St. James’ Park complex has been a success since it began. In barely 20 months, the magpies have gone from being in relegation places in the Premier to certifying their ticket to the Champions League almost two decades later.
The investment since October 2021, the date on which PIF (Saudi Public Investment Fund) bought 80% of the club, has been high, but not excessive. Eddie Howe came to the bench and the great radical change in terms of results was immediate. In total, PIF has put 286.4 million on the table in the three windows since he owned Newcastle.
The most expensive signing was Isak, who came from Real Sociedad in exchange for 70 million. One of the first, and perhaps fundamental, ended up being that of Bruno Guimaraes (Lyon, 42.1). Others like goalkeeper Pope (Burnley, 11.5) were absolutely fundamental because they closed the bleeding of goals against conceded tightly.

The summer in which Newcastle returns to the Champions League, they can activate a list of renowned signings that to date has been frozen, but which has very illustrious names. In the portfolio of magpies there are footballers like Neymar, Joao Felix, Kane, Chukwueze, Maddison, Milinkovic-Savic, Diaby, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai, Kudus and Eze. That is to say, top-level stars and some others in clear progression that would make Howe’s team a real bogeyman in the Premier League and in Europe.
One thing is certain: Newcastle will go to pot 4 in the Champions League draw on August 7. This will make it a match for all powerful teams and therefore a real threat. Neither Barcelona, which will be in number 1, nor Madrid, in number 2, would avoid the magpies -unless they get another Englishman from one of the remaining drums-. If, as it seems, the summer is prolific in terms of signings, the box from the north of England can be a very serious threat as it already is in the Premier.
