A breach for Leylah?

The picture opens up a bit for Leylah Annie Fernandez following the surprise loss to Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic, 12e seeded in the women’s category at Roland-Garros. Recently bothered by a leg injury, she lost on Monday to Russian Elina Avanesyan, 134e world and drafted player. That is, they lost their third and final qualifying match, but made it to the main draw due to a last-minute forfeit. But before thinking about the third round, the Quebecer will have to get rid of the yellow Danish Clara Tauson, 127e.

Bianca enters the scene

Still with the Canadians, Bianca Andreescu will begin her tournament on Tuesday. She will have quite the challenge against former world number 1 Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, 18e favorite of the competition. The 22-year-old Ontarian will be the third maple leaf athlete to set foot on the magnificent Simonne-Mathieu court in three days, after Leylah and Félix Auger-Aliassime. Andreescu, now 42e in the WTA, certainly hopes to experience the joys of victory like Fernandez, which would be a first for her since the end of March.

Successful entries for Alcaraz and Djokovic

The two big favorites in the men passed the first round easily. Carlos Alcarez did not drag on the Suzanne-Lenglen, eliminating in his way the Italian from the qualifications Flavio Cobolli, 6-0, 6-2 and 7-5, in less than two hours. The world No. 1 said he felt “invincible” early in the game. We have no trouble believing it! As for Novak Djokovic, the third seed cut his teeth by beating American Aleksandar Kovacevic in three sets, 6-3, 6-2 and 7-6 (1).

A 4h35 marathon for Wawrinka

Stan Wawrinka gave meaning to his moniker ‘Stan the Man’ when he emerged victorious in a 4h 35min marathon over Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas in five sets 7-5(7), 6-4, 6-7 (2), 1-6 and 6-4. The two veterans (38 for the Swiss and 35 for Ramos-Vinolas) gave quite a show on the small court 14. Their best years are behind them, but they still have some left in the tank. Wawrinka, a former third in the world, who is now at 89e rank, had not won at Roland-Garros for three years.
