????Losing Rodgers didn’t change anything in what the Packers think about Draft

It is not possible to say that the Green Bay Packers Drafts are the most conventional: it is common to see the team ignoring the consensus and seeking projects, while some safer prospects end up being left aside. However, it is also not fair to say that the franchise does not have a recruiting philosophy: those selected, in general, are above-average athletes, those who fill the eyes of coaches. Also, it has a high ceiling and if they succeed, the franchise hits high.

In 2023, nothing different. There was even an expectation that with the exchange of Aaron Rodgers, general manager Brian Gutekunst could be more conservative – something seen in the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks after the departures of Tom Brady and Russell Wilson -, but this was far from happening. Showing confidence in Jordan Love, who had a contract extended recently -, the franchise attacked again in players whose ceiling is the attraction.

The project matters

In times when we see Vanderlei Luxemburgo return to the Brazilian football scene, one word is in vogue: project (or as the coach would say, “pojeto”). The Packers now have Love as their future plan, but in the Draft they made it clear that thinking about the future is not exclusive to the quarterback position. Lukas Van Ness was selected 13th overall, repeating something seen with Rashan Gary in 2019. He is a player with an impressive body type, elite athleticism, but still very raw and will need refining. The plan should be to keep him behind Gary and Preston Smith in 2023, gaining ground only in 2024.

In addition, the fold in tight ends is something that calls attention: Luke Musgrave came in the second round and Tucker Kraft in the third. Without Rodgers, this could possibly indicate a shift towards a team that uses more heavy packages, banking on tight ends to create favorable matchups when going to the pass. Jayden Reed in the second round is a very questionable choice for the wide receiver corps, with quality names available to complement the unit that would be better options. Finally, the team hits the 3rd – something that has happened in the last Drafts – by bringing the good Colby Wooden and Karl Brooks to the defensive line.
