WTA tennis: Leylah Fernandez’s career ends in doubles in Charleston

Quebecer Leylah Fernandez and her doubles partner Taylor Townsend went down 6-0, 4-6 (11-9) in the quarterfinals of the Charleston tournament on Thursday.

Australian Storm Hunter and American Caroline Dolehide, seeded third, advance to the semi-finals, where they join favorites Guiliana Olmos and Ena Shibahara.

Fernandez, who was eliminated in singles action yesterday, was a runner-up with Townsend at the Miami tournament last week.

Dolehide was also in singles action today, but lost 6-3, 7-5 to No. 2 seed and No. 5 in the world Ons Jabeur.

Pegula climbs the slope against Begu

Jessica Pegula lost 10 straight games and trailed 4-0 in the final set on Thursday before coming back to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Irina-Camelia Begu, 15th seed, played 10 games in a row before Pegula pulled out all the stops to win the last six games.

“It was a pretty crazy match,” Pegula said.

Pegula’s next rival will be Paula Badosa, who beat Diana Snaider 6-3 6-1.

Others continue the adventure, as do the No. 2 seed Ons Jabeur, Daria Kasatkina and Belinda Bencic, who beat Jabeur to triumph last year on the green clay of Charleston.

Kasatkina brushed aside Bernarda Pera 6-3, 7-6 (3); and Bencic bounced back from her opening set loss to oust Shelby Rogers 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Pegula didn’t fully understand how things got so bad and then so good again.

“What was going through my mind was, ‘I can’t believe I’ve lost six straight games, seven straight games, eight, nine, 10,'” she said.

“I can’t remember the last time I was like this and lost so many consecutive games, so I was frustrated, but I was able to relax and play a very good game (from 4-0 in the third set). »

Jabeur will face Anna Kalinskaya, who beat two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azerenka 6-4, 7-6 (5).

Kasatkina will face either Magda Linette or Madison Keys on Friday.

Bencic will face Ekaterina Alexandrova, who defeated Julia Grabher 6-4, 6-2.
