who’s who in the race to be president

Fabian Doman he is no longer the president of Independent. A little over six months after being the head of the list that he moved to Hugo Moyano and company, the journalist and television host, amid threats and cornered by the sports and institutional crisis, stepped aside. In his replacement, provisionally, he assumed Nestor Grindettifirst vice president of the institution, mayor of Lanús -he requested a 30-day license- and pre-candidate for governor in Buenos Aires for Together for Change.

The big question is to know who will be the definitive replacement for Doman once the Extraordinary Assembly is called in which the president who will complete the mandate will be defined.

What does the club statute say? “The Vice President will provisionally exercise the functions that according to the previous article correspond to the President, in cases of temporary absence, license, illness or any other impediment not exceeding 90 days. In cases of death, resignation or terms that exceed 90 days, the Assembly of Representatives will designate their replacement from among the members of the Board of Directors who meet the requirements of article 78 “.

Who meets the requirements of article 78? All members of the current Board of Directors. Substitute members or account reviewers or partner representatives may not aspire to the highest position. For example, the deputy and also a pre-candidate for Buenos Aires governor for Together for Change, Christian Ritondoone of the owners of the coalition that brought Doman to power, is not in a statutory position to take the reins of the club.

In short, these are the people who make up the Board of Directors and may be elected via Extraordinary Assembly to become the next president of Independiente.

Nestor Grindetti

Born in Lanús 68 years ago, he is the provisional president of Independiente after Doman’s departure. An actuary by profession, he is one of the founding members of the PRO and Mauricio Macri’s side since the days of SOCMA, where he entered as a cadet and ended up as a member of the board of directors. Later, already involved in the arenas of politics, he served as Minister of Finance of the government of the City of Buenos Aires and since 2015 he has been the mayor of Lanús, where Darío Díaz Pérez preceded and is now in his second term. He also intends to run for governor of the Province of Buenos Aires in the next elections.

Good management during his time at Independiente can be an interesting campaign platform to dream of being the strong man of the largest constituency in Argentina. For now, he moved quickly to hire an experienced manager like Ricardo Zielinski and we’ll have to wait and see if he can raise the money the club needs to put the debts and lawsuits that put Doman on the ropes on track.

He is also the son of former referee Guillermo Marconi, current head of SADRA, one of the two guilds that groups the judges of the Argentine soccer. At one point, he thought of running for president but he was finally part of the coalition that was put together to drive the Moyanos from power in the Avellaneda club. He threatened to present his resignation in the first months of the Doman administration, but now he seems committed to accompanying the transition. “Based on the statute, we are talking that Grindetti will be president for 90 days. After that period, we have to see what happens. Today the president is Néstor, so we will continue working for as long as it takes and it could be more if it is an option” , counted in the last hours.
