When a dream career ended emotionally
After an outstanding career, Dirk Nowitzki stopped four years ago. In the end he got an emotional farewell from his archrival.
A world career ended exactly four years ago!
Dirk Nowitzki, the best German basketball player in history and top star in the NBA, played his last game for his Dallas Mavericks on March 10, 2019 in San Antonio.
The day before he had announced his retirement at the end of the season at the home game against the Phoenix Suns.
In his last game with the Spurs, Nowitzki lost 94:105 and was then celebrated by the audience despite the great rivalry between the two teams.
Spurs video moves Nowitzki to tears
Before the game started, the Spurs presented a video with highlights from Nowitzki’s career, which brought tears to his eyes. He had to blow deeply again and again.
Ironically, the fans of the franchise, who for years were the biggest rivals of the Mavs in Nowitzki’s time, celebrated him with a standing ovation in the AT&T Center. “Thank You Dirk” also shone on the screens in the arena.

Before the game started, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich exchanged a few words with Nowitzki, which was followed by a long hug.
Nowitzki shines with a double-double
Nowitzki, who played for the same club for 21 years, managed another double-double in 31:33 minutes with 20 points and ten rebounds. It was his 411.
At the end of his successful career, number six in the all-time scorer list has 31,560 points. The club idol of the Mavericks hit his last throw at the basket for 92:105.
Popovich didn’t like the fact that Nowitzki was initially closely defended by Drew Eubanks. Angry and gesticulating wildly, he tried to get Eubanks to kindly let Nowitzki throw, as the timeout had previously ordered.
Viewers chant “MVP” again
The then Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle took the Würzburg off the field immediately afterwards, 46.8 seconds were still on the clock. Like the day before in Dallas, the audience chanted “MVP”.
Nowitzki was hugged by teammates and opponents, he applauded the fans.

Nowitzki, flag bearer at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, won bronze at the 2002 World Championships and silver at the 2005 European Championships with the national team.
As announced in April 2023, Nowitzki will be the first German to be inducted into the NBA’s “Hall of Fame”.
